I remember when Theseus was first announced, it was supposedly coming relatively soon, but knowing how these things usually go, I honestly wasn't expecting it till August or September. Well, surprise, surprise...Theseus is coming on July 26th to PlayStation VR. For those that don't know Theseus is a 3rd person action adventure game by Forge Reply Games. Yes, you heard me right, it's 3rd person. It's quite unfortunate that many VR gamers consider 3rd person to be a 2nd class citizen among VR game types. I get the hesitance in accepting 3rd person VR. Isn't Virtual Reality all about immersing yourself into the game world? Isn't it all about you, holding that sword and shield in your real (virtual) hands? Well, anybody that has played Chronos (Rift) or Bound (PSVR), could probably tell you, don't throw the baby out with the bathwater when it comes to 3rd person VR gaming.
Even though you might be playing the game from a 3rd person perspective, you still feel like you're inside that world. Technically, you ARE in that world. It's just you're an invisible ghost, holding an invisible controller, controlling the 3rd person adventurer that is running around the landscape that surrounds you. It's still easy to get completely caught up in the atmosphere and vibe of the game. I remember playing Edge of Nowhere for the Oculus Rift, and being blown away by how much fear I was feeling, even though I'm playing a 3rd person game. The 3D audio and the creepy vibe of the game did wonders for putting me into that experience. So, don't think that Theseus can't hit the PSVR platform with some serious force. If this game is as good as Chronos or Bound, then it's probably a must grab title. The good news is that we only have to wait a couple of weeks and we'll be able to try it for ourselves.
